Dr. Maina Gĩokõ





Gioko is the Head of the Professional Development Capacity Centre at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa (A Microsoft Showcase School). An Adjunct Assistant Professor at Aga Khan University, Institute of Education AKUE-IED.He is the Project Manager AKA, M Strengthening Education System in East Africa, INTEL-Educating Girls in Science, and SSHRC-Learning Toolkit projects. He has vast experience in facilitating Microprocessor systems, Information Technology, Computing Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Science Education, Education Leadership and Management, Lead facilitation and Transfer of training. He is a Master Trainer with the International Education and Resource Network and a Professional Development Teacher with Aga Khan University. He is an examiner, online facilitator, workshop leader, and school reviewer with an International Baccalaureate.

 He is married with two sons, and he loves cycling, jogging, swimming, and trekking.

 He holds a Doctor of Management from Swiss Management Center University, a Master in Education, a Certificate in Science Education and a Certificate in ICT Education from Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan, a Bachelor of Science (Physics and Mathematics) from Egerton University, Kenya, Diploma in Teacher Education and Certificates in Graphics Design and Media Studies from Mombasa Polytechnic, Kenya.

He has attended Internships, Fellowships, Workshops, Seminars, and Conferences in the USA, Asia, Europe, and Eastern and Southern Africa in from a range of curriculum-based topics to Leadership and Management, Technology Integration, and Education for Sustainable Development.

He has taught Kenya National Examination Council (Ordinary and Higher Diploma), Kenya Certificate Secondary Education, General Certificate Education, International General Certificate Secondary Education, and IB (Middle Years and Diploma program) curriculums. He has conducted workshops on Science, Projects, and Integration of ICT in teaching and learning in Kenya, Uganda, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the USA.

He has designed courses in Education Leadership and Management, Science Education, Technology infusion in education, Enhancement of Core skills in education, Activity-based instruction in science, and Lead Facilitator Preparation. He has facilitated Science Education, Educational Leadership and Management, Teaching, Learning, and Assessments courses with the Aga Khan University IED, EA. He has facilitated the Teachers Standard Course with the Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya. Future of Learning Institute Harvard Graduate School of Education (Fellow 2012, Faculty 2013)

He has coordinated programs including, needs assessment, strategic planning, teacher training, leadership and management, teachers association, and collaborative discussion forums.

He is a journal reviewer and an author with the IB Journal of Teaching Practice, Education and Information Technologies, and Professional Development.


His research interests are Project Management, Teacher Leadership, Curriculum Enrichment, and Sustainable Development

He is a Microsoft Certified Educator, A Microsoft Fellow,  a member of the International Federation for Information Processing, (IFIP) International Education and Resource Network (IEARN), and a Board Member Global Action Plan

A  recipient of Second Most Innovative Teacher on Content in Africa(2010) and a finalist African representative at the World Wide Innovative Education Forum (WWIEF). Most innovative teacher in East and Southern Africa 2011 and Middle East and African Finalist at WWIEF. Microsoft Fellow (2016). Baldev Singh Impact Finalist 2020, Global Teacher Finalist 2019, Alumni Leadership for Education AKU 2019, Top 100 Africa’s Movers and Shakers in Corporate Online Learning 2018  and HGSE Fellow 2012
